Kevin Van Loan offers his thoughts on the NRA after recent events at Rider University.

The NRA is an organization that is misunderstood and it is a very sad thing for our country that this is so. The NRA or the National Rifle Association is not known by many college students in New Jersey. The College Republicans took unofficial polls of various students while promoting the event and the number of students who did not know what the NRA stood for or what they did was alarming. At that point we knew we would be up for a challenge and just getting people to understand the importance of the NRA and what they do proved to be a worthy and successful endeavor by the Rider CR’s.

Too many people have a negative view or connotation of the NRA and having a student body that was largely unaware of the stereotype we were able to recruit some interested individuals to attend our NRA University event and the results were overwhelming. Students who took part in the NRA University overwhelmingly left with a positive view of the organization and were well equipped to see through biases that are often portrayed by the media and unfortunately by some academics.

The greatest example were those who had heard the NRA’s message in varying ways without ever coming directly in contact with the NRA. One is the gun safety mascot Eddie the Eagle. Eddie is one of the areas of the NRA’s education and investment that organizations like Ceasefire do not want to talk about. Eddie the Eagle was introduced as a concept over 20 years ago and is still used as a mascot for Gun Safety in schools throughout the country. The simple message for kids that tells them what to do if they ever find a firearm. “STOP, Don’t touch, leave the area, tell an adult” articulates in a rhythmic song that kids can remember and it is certain to have saved lives and increased safety around gun related accidents significantly. Unfortunately, Anti-Gun organizations do not like to give credit where it is due and will not recognize this success.
The Anit-NRA message is one that is fabricated by regulationists who have nothing better to do then impede upon others freedoms. In realizing this upon attending CPAC in 2011 the Rider CR’s made it a mission to spread the word and get the NRA University segment of the NRA to our campus. We had great results and I had an opportunity to speak with Cam from the NRANews.com about the outcome of the event.

April 5, 2011 @6pm- 8pm: NRA University

The National Rifle Association (NRA) is coming to Rider’s campus for an event called NRA University. They’ll be food, free NRA swag, and a chance to learn more about Second Amendment rights and the gun control debate. Location: Science Building Room 102 @6pm- 8pm

This is the Facebook event link: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=197979153558809

April 12, 2011 @5pm: Rider Economic Forum

Ever wonder what’s really going on in our economy? Are you interested in learning about the chance of another recession, effects of President Obama’s stimulus package, the role monetary policy has had on the recovery, or the truth about unemployment statistics? Well these are just a few of the many economics and finance topics that will be discussed. This is a chance for you to find out what’s really going on as explained by several of Rider’s knowledgeable business professors. There will also be a chance, for those of you who have your own questions, to have them answered. Location: Sweigart Building Room 205 @5pm-7pm

On Wednesday March 30th at 5:00 pm the College Republican’s will be hosting an Open Policy Forum in the Sweigart Auditorium. The Forum will discuss topics including Environmental Policy, Taxation, Illegal Immigration, Abortion, and Healthcare. The purpose of this discussion is to find what areas of these often “heated” debates that people with different views agree upon. By looking for the similarities in views, acceptable policy and overall belief structure we can begin to work forward in shaping policy that is mutually agreeable and mutually beneficial.
Any questions regarding the event should be forwarded to Kevin Van Loan at (908) 477 6476 or via email @ Vanloank@gmail.com

We look forward to seeing all of you at the event!
