Another one of our republican colleagues, Alabama Attorney General Troy King gets caught in a gay sex scandal. He was caught in his marital bed with another man. A harsh critic of homosexuality and even attempted to ban sex toys, the Alabama attorney general is filth. It disgusts me how the Republican Party holds itself as the moral compass for this country when we stand behind people who spew hateful bigoted comments. The Republican Party stands for free markets and limited government. The party should NOT pretend to be the religious or moral leaders of this country. The governments function is not to uphold morality; it is to protect individual rights. To state that the federal government should tolerate anything other than equal rights for all smacks of a Jim Crow existence I do not tolerate or accept. We deserve better and demand better from our party than to allow the elected officials we nominate to support this trash. When members of the Republican Party, particularly from the Christian right, pander to people of faith we come off sounding condescending and hypocritical. How can one support limited government and also ask the federal government to deal with marriage (a states’ rights issue) and abortion (a decision already dealt with by the Supreme Court). I hope that we learn from the mistakes of Tom Foley, Larry Craig and now Attorney General King. We should only nominate candidates who actually support the constitution, support human rights and only tolerate a limited, small government. After all, people are mere mortals and mortals have the ability to sin. A quote from the bible, “Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:21), even alludes to separate moral and governmental entities. The party of Lincoln and Reagan deserves better.
